Citywide Banks is continuing its support of the Denver Health Foundation with a $10,000 contribution that will go toward an endowment to fund expansion of Denver Health Medical Center's Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Services program. The donation is part of a recent $50,000 multi-year commitment by the bank. The funds will go toward research and treatment for youth faced with depression, bi-polar disorder, drug addiction, schizophrenia, and suicidal disorder.
Such research is much needed given recent recognition of the importance of mental health to overall health and wellness. Unfortunately, this recognition occurs at the same time there have been deep cuts in federal funding for medical research, making it necessary for private philanthropy to keep important mental health research going. Denver Health is an ideal setting to carry out mental health research that immediately benefits youth because it has both an experienced research infrastructure and a wide patient-care network. For example, Denver Health is the only facility among 12 area hospitals to provide the continuum of inpatient, outpatient, and substance abuse care for children needing behavioral health services. Furthermore, Denver Health provides these services across the city in ten community clinics and 17 school-based health centers to make this care more accessible.
“For decades, Citywide Banks has been passionate about supporting mental health wellness programs in Denver,” explained Kevin Quinn, president and CEO of Citywide Banks. “The need for mental health awareness, research, and treatment programs in our community is as prevalent as ever. We are proud to help champion these programs.”
"With the help of partners in the community the child and adolescent programs at Denver Health have grown tremendously," explained Dr. Robert House, director of behavioral health physician services at Denver Health. "We are in the process of adding additional beds, expanding outpatient services, and expanding our adolescent substance abuse services at a time of a national epidemic. Funds raised for the endowment have allowed us to recruit a young physician to expand our research programs. For the first time ever, child-based faculty are presenting their work on a national and international level."
